ANALYSIS 1 :: BEFORE THE EXPERIMENT

When planning the event I'd been drawn to the notion of standardization in the running of the algorithm. My focus was on the idea that part of the exercise was to understand the working of the algorithms themselves (despite their exact configuration being irrelevant). This was meant to explore the functionality of the rules in the experiment.

This on a formal level, augmented on an experiential level by the concept of the derive, in which subjective impressions, feelings, observations about passing ambient zones might be noted. I had some initial concern about balancing these two aspects because I didn't want to become so prescriptive in my instructions that the subjective portion of the experiment would be undermined for the participants. I felt that it was important for everybody to have their own experiences without being bowled over by the demands of the algorithm and its rules.

With regard to the design of a response to a certain outcome, I became fixated on the fact that the small downtown area was surrounded by the ocean and felt that this would likely be a factor in at least a small portion of the dead ends. I distributed materials for the construction of paper airplanes and requested that they be deployed if the ocean was experienced as a dead end. I felt at the time that this might illuminate the experience of a dead end as well as illustrating something about the landscape and how it is shaped by being surrounded on all sides by water.
