SUMMARY :: 2

In the emptiness below Pender we passed a subdued pair of pedestrians. They were quiet and despairing. 30 minutes later we saw them again. We remarked that they were doing the same thing that we were, but didn't know it. One of the other teams later observed that "you never know what people are doing."

Though the surroundings were desolate and the buildings empty and sealed, the mood of our team was elevated. The sky was very blue and the clear yellow light that hit the buildings at the top created an angled reflection of clouds and sun on immense glass shapes. The sea lay between us and the mountains. The absence of traffic seemed to signal the possibility that business people were somewhere else doing other things, like swimming or looking at flowers.

An alternate reading of this deadness and emptiness however points to a problematic absence of vital street culture and an overfondness for insulation machines.

Our further progress toward the waterfront was stopped by a plastic gate where somebody is about to build a condominium. Signs on concrete barriers said things like "keep away", and "keep out". Later we constructed our paper airplanes and threw them over the fence, aiming for the floating gas station.

It seemed clear that we should regard this as a terminal point but it was hard to relinquish the algorithm.
